Tuesday, Marcia Laus from the Watson Institute, a district consultant, came and spoke with the entire fifth grade about Autism Awareness. She discussed with the students what autism is and what students with autism may experience. The students then participated in some activities that helped them understand the kinds of sensory issues that children with autism experience on a daily basis. Activities such as sensations from feeling different fabrics, placing buttons in a hole while wearing large gloves, and trying to complete a math assignment while others were loudly singing. Ms. Laus then gave us several strategies for helping and playing with students.
